Research and product strategy from someone who ships
I'm Rene Zelaya. I spent eight years doing UX research inside SaaS, telecom, and financial services companies. Now I also build and sell my own software at MITM LLC. Hire me when something's off with your product and you want to know what it is before you pay to fix the wrong thing.
Not sure what kind of help you need? That's normal. Email me and we'll figure it out. If you'd rather start small, start with a heuristic evaluation. Want proof before you write anything? See my work.
Product and web strategy consulting
for founders and small teams staring at a long backlog with no confident way to order it
You get
- A written recommendation on what to build, what to cut, and in what order
- Scoping and prioritization you can defend to your team and your investors
- Input on pricing, packaging, and success metrics you can actually measure
I make these calls with my own money on the line. Skycritter, my iOS app, is live with paying customers in the US and France. I set its pricing model and designed the single human review gate in its LLM-orchestrated asset pipeline. WhisperPad, my macOS speech-to-text app, has paying users, Paddle billing, and nine releases behind it. I've lived with the consequences of my own product decisions. That changes the advice.
UX research
for teams that are guessing what users want and know it
You get
- A research plan matched to your actual question, generative or evaluative
- The study itself: interviews, usability and concept testing, surveys, journey mapping, mobile ethnography, or diary studies
- A findings readout with prioritized recommendations your team can act on this quarter
At Charter, my research on the Spectrum News app reframed its segmentation from ZIP code to identity, nostalgia, and concern for people elsewhere. That work informed a multi-year roadmap: custom geolocation, multi-location tracking, cross-device. The app hit 1M+ downloads in eight months and its iOS rating climbed from 4.2 to 4.8.
Heuristic evaluations
for anyone who suspects their product has usability problems and wants a fast answer at a fixed scope
the easiest way to work with meNo recruiting, no scheduling sessions, no waiting on participants.
You get
- An expert review of your product or site against established usability heuristics
- Prioritized findings: what's broken, how much it costs you, what to fix first
- A walkthrough call to go through the findings together
Eight years of evaluative research trained the eye. Shipping my own apps keeps it honest. I know the difference between a cosmetic issue and one that's quietly losing you customers.
Research operations
for teams whose research lives in one person's head, a shared drive, and three abandoned Notion pages
You get
- A structured framework for generative and evaluative research
- An intake and prioritization process, so requests stop arriving by hallway ambush
- A repository and templates, so findings outlive the study
- Coaching for your designers and PMs to run their own studies safely
At Thrivent Financial I inherited a young research practice and developed it. I established the team's first structured framework for generative and evaluative work and mentored junior researchers and designers along the way. That practice held up in a regulated environment: it aligned Product, Operations, Legal, Design, and Fulfillment on one end-to-end life insurance journey, mapped current-vs-target with survey data, customer quotes, and video embedded.
Voice of the Customer program implementation
for teams drowning in feedback they never read twice
You get
- A classification system that turns support transcripts, surveys, and in-product feedback into categories that mean something
- Dashboards product teams can use on their own, from top-level score down to their product's specific issues
- A handoff plan so the program keeps running without me
At LogMeIn I co-owned a VOC program spanning 21 products. Program outcomes: CSAT up 15%, support call volume down 12%. I authored the classification ontology behind its Clarabridge NLP system, built from a three-week field study at the Costa Rica support center where I led a team of three researchers. I designed the dashboards so product teams could drill from global NPS down to their own product's issues without a researcher in the room.
one person, no handoffs
When you hire me, I do the work.
The person answering your email is the person running your interviews, writing your findings, and building your dashboards.
